About melanoma and other skin cancers in New Zealand

  • New Zealand has one of the highest incidence rates of melanoma in the world and the highest death rate.

  • More people die from skin cancer in New Zealand each year than on our roads.

  • There are more than 8,000 diagnoses of melanoma each year, and around 300 people will die from the disease.

  • Skin cancer is by far the most common cancer in New Zealand, with eight out of every ten cancers being diagnosed as skin cancer.

  • The vast majority of skin cancers are preventable (around 90%).
